The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Director, Mr. Sultan Hajiyev, and the Director of Technical Cooperation of the Ministry of Planning, Mr. Essam Garbaa, visited Sirt to follow-up on the progress of the Stabilization Facility for Libya (SFL), a multi-donor initiative implemented by UNDP in close coordination with the Ministry of Planning.
The delegation met with the Mayor of Sirt, Mr. Mokhtar Khalifa Al-Madani, other members of the Municipal Council, and civil society representatives at the Municipal building. They discussed recent accomplishments of the Facility, emerging priorities and plans for future engagement. The delegation went to the public cleaning company where UNDP has supplied five garbage trucks and 200 bins. The visit ended at the recently rehabilitated Sirt Polyclinic, which was used by Daesh during their occupation of the city. The Facility repaired windows, doors, walls, lights and the façade, enabling the center to reopen.
“I applaud UNDP for scaling up its work in Sirt. By rehabilitating the Polyclinic, the SFL has brought back health services at one of the most important health facilities in the city,” declared Mr. Mokhtar, “and we hope that SFL will continue and expand its support”.
Mr Garbaa said: “It is crucial to communicate to all stakeholders the purpose of the Facility. Led by the Government of National Accord (GNA), the SFL aims to create conditions for peace and Sirt is one of our priorities. Work must be prioritized to create maximum impact, unite communities and restore normal life.”
On his part, Mr. Hajiyev stated: “I’m pleased to see the progress made. However, there is so much more to be done. We are committed to expediting ongoing projects and identifying options for new initiatives. The crisis in Sirt is challenging, but it presents unique opportunity, to promote localized SDGs in the city.”
In Sirt, SFL also delivered ambulances and medical waste incinerators to Ibn Sina Hospital. The Facility is now exploring possible ways to further support the citizens by expediting ongoing projects and identifying new.
